Sri Lanka, Windies begin World Cup test today

Early start at the SSC in showdown for flood victims

Sri Lanka Cricket said yesterday that it has decided to donate all gate money from the Sri Lanka versus West Indies ODI series which starts today at the SSC ground in Colombo towards the welfare of displaced flood victims in the east of the country. As such Sri Lanka Cricket said it has decided not to issue complementary tickets for the three match series.

Tickets are priced at Rs 3000, 1000, 750, 500, 150 and Rs.50.

“This series will also be remembered for a worthy cause and we appeal to all cricket fans to patronize the series and be a part of this worthy cause”, said Sri Lanka Cricket’s media manager Brian Thomas.

He said the start of play will be at 9.30 a.m in a bid to beat the threat of poor light conditions later in the evening.

But charity apart both teams will be using the occasion to tune up for the all-important World Cup scheduled and the players who will play in the first two games will be the desired playing eleven for the big event.

“Hopefully if we can win the first two games then we may think of some changes, but we would be fielding the best players we have with a view to the World Cup”, said Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara.

His West Indies counterpart Darren Sammy said that although they would have preferred day-night games what was important was the kind of cricket they will play before the World Cup.

“We are used to playing day-night games but any match will be taken seriously as preparation for the World Cup. We will be playing most of our games in India and here is where we want to start”, said Sammy.
