Bailey, Lyon picked for Caribbean ODIs

George Bailey and Nathan Lyon have won Australian ODI call-ups while Brad Haddin is a confirmed West Indies tourist after the national selectors unveiled their squads for the limited overs segments of the Caribbean tour.

As the national Twenty20 captain, Bailey was due to tour for two matches, but he will now take on the mantle of reserve ODI batsman in a squad that largely resembles that chosen for the final phase of the triangular series.

Lyon will join Xavier Doherty as a spinner on tour, having first made his name as a T20 bowler for South Australia last summer then graduating to first-class, Australia A and Test match call-ups.

Haddin's inclusion alongside Matthew Wade followed some speculation over his place, though the coach Mickey Arthur had indicated some weeks ago that both glovemen would make the tour.

Michael Hussey has been recalled to the T20 squad after resting from the two matches against India, while Mitchell Starc will tour as a cricketing intern under the tutelage of the bowling coach Craig McDermott, though he is not officially part of either squad.

John Inverarity, the national selector, indicated that Shaun Marsh, Travis Birt and Aaron Finch now found themselves out of the best batting line-up and were therefore not touring, though Brad Hogg remains a strong chance to play in the World T20 later in the year despite not travelling to the West Indies.

"The ODI squad is the same as the squad for the Commonwealth Bank Series finals beginning next week with the addition of three players in Brad Haddin, Nathan Lyon and George Bailey," Inverarity said. "This completes a well-balanced squad and it is anticipated that most players will receive good opportunities to show their worth.

"Shane Watson and Mike Hussey come back into the T20 squad to provide a great deal of experience and power to the batting line-up. If we were to select our best T20 team to play next week the top seven in order would be Watson, Warner, Mike Hussey, David Hussey, Bailey, Wade and Christian. Hence, there was simply no room on this occasion for Shaun Marsh, Travis Birt and Aaron Finch. Though Peter Forrest is in the T20 squad, it is not anticipated he will be in the team and is there as back-up.

"As was stated in January, Brad Hogg was not considered for this tour. However, he remains in strong contention to be a member of our ICC World Twenty20 squad which is likely to include three spin bowlers.

"Additionally, Mitchell Starc has not been selected as a member of this squad. However, Mitchell will travel with this group as a further development opportunity and spend valuable time around the Australian squad in the West Indies,"
