Andrew Strauss
could be set to resign as England's Test captain on Wednesday,
according to reports in the English media. Late on Tuesday night, the
ECB announced that Hugh Morris, the managing director of the England
team, would hold a press conference at Lord's at noon on Wednesday.
The subject of the media conference was not confirmed by the ECB, but
several English newspapers reported Strauss was likely to step down.
Strauss took a break following the Test series against South Africa and
was expected to return for Middlesex this week for their Championship
match against Worcestershire. He, however, withdrew from the side to
extend his family holiday.
Strauss, 35, played his hundredth Test at Lord's against South Africa
and after the loss he said he still had "a lot of desire" but did not
categorically declare his intention to continue leading the side.
Strauss said at the time he was keen to take a break and then discuss
the future with the coach Andy Flower.
The South African series was a difficult one for Strauss, who not only
had to deal with the ongoing Kevin Pietersen saga but also his own
struggle for runs - his best score during the three Tests was 37. If he
was to resign, the most likely scenario would be that Alastair Cook
would take over the Test captaincy in addition to his duties as ODI
captain.
